I taught a class for teachers in Henrico County on the seduction and power of words.

Favorite Web Site: TED.com (Technology, Entertainment, and Design). I think this is the best web site of all. TED feeds your left (logical) brain and your right (creative) brain while simultaneously inspiring you and fighting the doom and gloom of the nightly news. As I often say to people depressed by the economy:  "Take (watch) two TEDs and call me in the morning." You could make this acronym:  Teaching, Encouraging, and Discovering. Put a TED in your head.

Favorite molecule: Fullerene or Buckyball - 60 carbon atoms.

Favorite color:  blue

Favorite TV:  Charlie Rose, Twilight Zone 1985-1989, Ray Bradbury Theater, Book TV, and the John Adams HBO special.

Favorite electronic gizmo:  Kindle - an E-reader created by Jeff Bezos and the people at Amazone.com. Thousands of books wirelessly available in a minute. "Kindle up with a good book." "Fire up your brain with a Kindle."

Favorite Magazines:  The New Yorker, Wired, Fast Company, Mad, Communication Arts, How, Seed, Creativity, Publisher's Weekly, Mental Floss, Technology Review (MIT), Smithsonian, Newsweek (It has "My Turn" and Time doesn't."), Atlantic Monthly, Harpers, Science of Mind, National Geographic, and Architectual Digest.

Favorite Conference:  the 2008 James River Writers Conference (David Baldacci, Kirk Ellis, Adriana Trigiani, Claudia Emerson, Colin Fox, Andrew Corsello, and more).

Most green and highest-tech invention:   Words

Lucky me:  Four years ago I was unconscious for 10 days because of ARDS and didn't die. (Well, great luck and wonderful doctors and nurses at Henrico Doctors' Hospital.)  I got to teach thousands of wonderful students and loved my job. (This was just before the high-stakes, state, multiple-choice, boring, teach-to-the-test people took over.) I got to walk through the Poe Museum in Richmond with my hero Ray Bradbury. I've won many lottery games-417.  I was in the last scene of the TV movie starring Jack Lemmon, The Murder of Mary Phagan. I was an extra playing the part of a telegraph operator. Kevin Spacey gave me a coin to pay me to send a message. (No, I didn't get to speak.)  I was an extra in four other movies playing a rock-throwing redneck, a senator, a photographer, and a Confederate soldier. Years ago I had a King Kong moment when I was on top of a building downtown in Richmond with a three-story Styrofoam ape holding a copy of Virginia LifeStyle Magazine. I got to meet and photograph Jacques Cousteau, President Jimmy Carter, stripper Blaze Starr, cartoonist Jeff MacNelly, writer Ray Bradbury, and many more.
